Affiliate Disclosures on Facebook

Profiles, Pages, and Groups all carry the same duty. Disclose before 'See more', and remember that Group posts — even in a group you run — are not exempt.

Facebook remains a major affiliate channel across personal profiles, Pages, and Groups. The disclosure obligation is the same throughout, but each surface has quirks that affect placement.

Posts and Pages

  • Disclose in the visible portion of the post, before the “See more” truncation, using clear wording such as “#ad” or “I earn a commission from this link.”
  • For Page posts promoting products you earn from, use the same clear in-post disclosure — a branded-content tool, where used, supplements but does not replace it.
  • Do not place the disclosure only in the comments.

Groups

Affiliate promotion inside Groups is a frequent blind spot. If you post an affiliate link in a Group — including a Group you administer — the material connection still must be disclosed in the post. Group admins who monetize recommendations to their members carry the same duty as any other publisher, and treating a Group as a “private” space does not remove the obligation.

Sharing and reselling

Resharing a merchant’s post through your own affiliate link, or reposting paid content, requires your own disclosure in your share — the original poster’s labeling does not cover you.

A worked example

Compliant: a Page post opens “#ad — we earn a commission from the link below” in the visible portion, before “See more.” Non-compliant: an admin drops an affiliate link into a 20,000-member Group with the pitch but no disclosure, assuming the “community” framing makes it personal rather than commercial.

The consistent standard

Across profiles, Pages, and Groups, the same three tests apply: the disclosure is visible without extra clicks, it is in plain language, and it sits with the recommendation. Meet those and the surface does not matter. For the underlying standard, see clear and conspicuous.

Facebook checklist

  • Disclosure in the visible portion, before “See more.”
  • Present on posts, Page posts, and Group posts alike.
  • Your own disclosure on any reshare or resell of paid content.
  • Not hidden in comments or relegated to a branded-content tag alone.
