The domains are marketed to users of Google’s “Apps for Your Domain” service which lets users use Google services like Gmail, Calendar and Page Creator on their own domains. “Apps” can be easily associated with existing domain names. Don’t own a domain? Register one right through Google.

Of the more than 250 top-level domain names in existence, Google is only selling names based on .com, .net, .biz, and .info. Both eNom and GoDaddy are among the top ICANN accredited domain registrars, with eNom specializing in wholesale registration. The domains they sell can sometimes go below Google’s $10, but registering a domain through Google will automatically connect it to Google’s “Apps.”

Now this is a coup that must have PayPal shaking. Google has announced that it will be extending its waiver of fees past the end of 2006 to December 31st, 2007! Unfortunately, however, there are reports that companies with affiliate programs have switched to this affordable system way too soon.

The problem is that Google Checkout requires serious tweaking before affiliate codes are passed along and properly recorded. And when I say “serious tweaking” I mean that even Commission Junction (CJ) has been reported to having some difficulty with the switchover; I smell some unfriendly programming! As a result, if companies with affiliate programs switch to Google Checkout too soon they may be alienating their bread and butter – affiliate sales.

I expect that if Google does not provide a clearer path to passing along affiliate id’s then there will be significant to the companies that switched too soon as well as some bad feelings towards Google. It should be noted that the affiliate marketplace is massive and carries some extensive clout; I am certain that many online businesses stay afloat solely on the backs of efficient affiliate programs. Caveat Emptor!

Fortunately Matt Cutts noted in WebmasterWorld that he, “…escalated this to the Google Checkout folks as soon as I heard about it, so I know they’re looking to see if there’s anything they can do pretty quickly to help on this issue.”

4. Affiliates are not allowed to use ritzpix.com site URL or trademarked terms in the display URL (either as all or part of its name) when bidding on any branded trademarked terms.

5. Affiliates may not use trademark symbols, registered mark symbols, or use the words “official site”, “official store” or “official” in their advertising for ritzpix.com.

6. Affiliates must ensure that all copy used for search and keyword purposes is appropriate and 100% accurate and does not contain any claims that could be construed to be false or misleading.

II. NON-BRANDED SEARCH TERMS & VISIBLE URLS: Affiliates are permitted to bid on non-branded keywords for products that Ritzpix.com represents, provided the following:

1. Affiliates are not allowed to use ritzpix.com site URL or trademarked terms in the display URL domain name (either as all or part of its name) when bidding on any non-branded search terms. Affiliates can include ritzpix.com as a folder within the URL domain name.

For example:
www. ritzpix.com .com is not allowed
www. (Affiliate website name) .com/ ritzpix.com is allowed

2. Affiliates may not use trademark symbols, registered mark symbols, or use the words “official site”, “official store” or “official” in their advertising for ritzpix.com.

3. Affiliates may not link directly to ritzpix.com on non-branded keywords for products that ritzpix.com represents.

4. Affiliates must ensure that all copy used for search and keyword purposes is appropriate and 100% accurate and does not contain any claims that could be construed to be false or misleading.

III. NOTIFICATION: Affiliates must agree that, following notice from Ritz Camera or Commission Junction, they will promptly remove any search listing containing copy and/or creative components that Ritz Camera, in its sole discretion, deems inappropriate for any reason. If Ritz Camera determines, in its sole discretion, that an affiliate has purchased or attempted to make any purchase in violation of the above policy, then Ritz Camera may (without limiting any other remedies available to it) pursue any or all of the following actions:
1. Withhold all compensation otherwise payable to you for the month in which you purchased the prohibited trademarked terms.

2. Contact the search engine in which your ad was found to ask that these ads be removed immediately and permanently.

3. Terminate this Agreement as provided in the section titled “Term of the Agreement; Termination”, and remove you from the ritzpix.com Affiliate Program permanently.
